In a little less than 24 hours, NERCT 2016 will kick off in Abuja, Nigeria, including presentations, training sessions and workshops by Dr Chiedozie Okoro, Associate Professor at Lagos University, Dr. Emmanus Nonyeze Odikaesieme, Group Chairman/Managing Consultant of Salemma Industrial Ltd. as well as MOSECON’s Yan St-Pierre, Nik Wright and Uzoma I. Kingsley.
Topics include “The Implication of youth restiveness/militancy, oil theft and pipeline vandalism in Niger Delta Region”, “Panpsychism & the challenge of security management in the contemporary world”, “Boko Haram as an African menace: Examining its expansion as ISWAP across west and north Africa”, “Stop Strategy Emergency Responders “, and a workshop on counter-terrorism “Going beyond weapons and military: The need for versatility and multilateralism”.
The challenges facing the participants of NERCT 2016 have perhaps never been greater. In Nigeria alone, the terror of Boko Haram is still ongoing; the Niger Delta sees the numbers of active militias and attacks on oil infrastructure increase on a weekly basis; nomadic violence and extremism is also on the rise, as is general crime in the country. All of these problems are compounded by one of the worst economic crises in Nigerian history. Internationally, the problems of Nigeria’s neighbours as well as its own – especially terrorism and illegal trafficking – are spilling over regionally and engulfing not only the Lake Chad region but also neighbouring regions. Despite this bleak picture, there is hope for solutions and a brighter future. This is what NERCT has been created for: To bring together Nigerians and international actors to help solve these problems.
Over the course of the two days, attendants will hear from specialists and practitioners about how they can tackle these issues and more importantly, what solutions are available. NERCT 2016 will not solve the problems overnight but it is a stepping stone on which to conceive strategies, develop plans and implement measures that will be effective in the short and long term. It is a platform for cooperation, for knowledge and ideas that allow security personnel and emergency responders to match the strength of terrorists and criminal organisations everywhere: flexibility, collaboration and resourcefulness.
As with the 2013 and 2015 editions of NERCT, MOSECON and Kingsyn Crystal Investments Ltd are proud to be the co-organisers of this event. We are also proud to have the largest and most diverse delegation of participants and speakers to this year’s event, a testimony to the interest the issue of security in Nigeria has garnered and how NERCT’s reputation as a credible security platform has grown since 2013.
