WSJ: Fritz Gelowicz Isn’t a Security Threat After Release From German Prison, Lawyer Says

Andrea Thomas, journalist with The Wall Street Journal in Berlin, interviewed Yan St-Pierre for her article about the release of Sauerland group leader Fritz Gelowicz earlier this week.

“The timing of the release is bad,” said Yan St-Pierre, a counterterrorism adviser and head of Modern Security Consulting Group MOSECON GmbH in Berlin. “But it’s a very typical release within the German justice system.”

Mr. St-Pierre said Germany, like other western nations under threat from Islamist radicals, has had to balance carefully its need for security with respect for the rule of law. “When push comes to shove, I think the German system is appropriate enough,” he said. “Not too soft, not too hard.”

Mr. St-Pierre said this incident and Mr. Gelowicz’s past convictions meant he “would be monitored for the rest of his life…We are talking here about a very prominent case. Everybody is going to have eyes on him.”
